The School Health Service
Introduction
Before starting school your child's health and development was monitored by your Health Visitor. This role will now be continued by your School Nurse.
What does the School Nurse do?
The School Nurse works in partnership with school staff to encourage children to adopt a healthy lifestyle and reach their full potential during their time at school.
What can the School Nurse offer me?
Drop-in sessions give you the opportunity to discuss any concerns or worries you may have in regard to any of your children in the school. The School Nurse can offer support or advice on a wide range of health topics including bedwetting, problems with behaviour, diet and existing conditions.
What to expect during your child's first year in school.
As your child comes into reception-class you will be sent a questionnaire to complete and return to school. This, along with a handover from your Health-Visitor gives the School Nurse a current picture of your child's health and development. During the reception-year, your School Nurse may spend time in the classroom working alongside school staff, getting to know the children and observing their developmental progress. It is important to remember that each child develops at their own pace.
What happens if a problem is identified with my child?
You will be the first person the School Nurse will contact. This may be by telephone, home-visit or by meeting with you in school. The School Nurse will be able to discuss with you the most appropriate action to take, for example referral to speech therapy/audiology etc.
Is any routine screening offered to my child?
Yes, their height, weight, and vision will be measured and recorded. This will be done within the school setting, (generally in small groups), and the results will be sent home to you.
What can School Nurses refer to?
With your consent the School Nurse is able to refer to a wide range of professionals, for example, GPs, Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists and Orthoptist.
